Build your own Outdoor Coffee Kit

All the things you need to make great coffee outside.

Everything I have listed here is because I have purchased and use and love the product myself - I do not do any brand deals or anything like that, so all opinions are my own. If you choose to purchase any item from the list below I may receive a commission, so thanks!

Step 1: you need coffee

Any coffee you want to take outside will work, of course. I do recommend using whole bean coffee and grinding your beans fresh. Our Trail Magic breakfast blend is a solid choice for your next outdoor adventure.

BAGS AND CASES

You need a “home” for all set up to get it out on the trail, so choose a bag for all your coffee making gear.

Backpack / Travel Bag

Topo Design Rover Pack

This pack has traveled to 10+ countries with me and it’s my go to for a day hike as well. It’s super well made - I have packed it full for my trips where I have to fight the zipper to close and all the zippers and stitching are sill in perfect condition. Plus it comes in cute colors.

Camp Stoves

My Favorite CAMP STOVE

MSR PocketRocket 2

This is the stove I use on all my backpacking trips, and LOVE it. It’s tiny so it fits perfectly in the Nero coffee kit case so you can quickly make a great cup of coffee in the morning.

**Fuel canisters are sold separately. You can pick those up at any REI or outdoor store.

Coffee Grinders

My FAVORITE AT HOME GRINDER

Shardor Electric Burr Grinder

Grinding your beans fresh makes a huge difference in quality of your coffee. If you just want to grind your own beans right before your camping trip or maybe even bring it out to campsite if you have electric hookup, here’s the grinder I have at home and love. It lets you grind to different levels of coarseness based on your preferred  brewing method.

Water Filtration

My FAVORITE Way to filter water

6 Liter Platypus Gravity Water Filter

I love the gravity filter because you can easily filter a larger amount of water without having to “manage” it. You just hand the bag with the water from outdoor water source and it filters through the water filtration system in to the clean bag or bottle below.

BackpacKING Pack

Osprey Aura 65L

This is my current favorite backpacking pack for longer trips. It has plenty of room for all your backpacking gear, but it’s also easy to carry your coffee making supplies. I use this pack when I am guiding my group day hikes with all my gear + my overnight trips so it’s super versatile I have always used Osprey packs for backpacking in general, but this pack literally feels like it is floating on your back with the built in frame suspension. Other packs have hurt my shoulders after a few miles of hiking and I would just deal with it, but this one is magic - i can’t even feel it on my shoulders and neck. She’s expensive but I have learned she is SO worth it.

Another Popular Camp Stove

Jetboil Flash Camping and Backpacking Stove Cooking System

This system has the container included to easily boil water in under 100 seconds. It’s a little larger than other camp stoves, but it works great and is super well made - it’ll last you years.

*Fuel canisters are sold separately.

My FAVORITE Off-Grid Grinder

Java Presse Manual Burr Grinder

If you are on a more off the grid adventure - here’s my favorite manual coffee grinder. It’s easy to toss in your backpack. With a manual burr grinder, you can freshly grind your whole bean coffee with precision, no matter where you are!

Great option! Smaller Platypus filter

1 Liter Gravity Water filter

The smaller verison of the Platypys gravoty filter I lobve and use on most of my guided coffee hikes. I love the gravity filter because you can easily filter a larger amount of water without having to “manage” it. You just hand the bag with the water from outdoor water source and it filters through the water filtration system in to the clean bag or bottle below.

Waterproof Dry Bag

Sea To Summit All-Purpose Dry Sack

These are great for tossing in your camp stove, fuel cannister, coffee, and a few mugs. They can hold a lot of the smaller coffee making gear so you can stay organized. I do a lot of backpacking and love that you can easily pack them full of similar items so everything doesn’t just fall to the bottom of your pack.

Best Basecamp Stove

Camp Chef 2 burner stove

You’re probably not carrying this one too far into to the forest, but if you are making coffee or breakfast at camp before a hike, this is a great stove. Honestly, everything Camp Chef makes is awesome, but this one is the one I would say is the most versatile.

*Fuel canisters are sold separately.

Awesome, Lightweight backpacking Grinder

GSI Outdoor Coffee Grinder

If weight matters for a longer hike here is a lighter one I love for backpacking trips.

Most Popular Water Filter in the Hiking Community

The Sawyer squeeze is super popular in the long distance backpacking community because it’s so compact, but it does require a little more effort to use than the gravity filter. It’s probably the best choice for the casual hiker as well since it’s so easy to toss in a day pack.

choose a Kettle:

So you can pour the water for your coffee - no matter your preferred brewing method. Here are two kettles I recommend. If you use a JetBoil to heat water, it’ll come with a water container (though it is hard to our our evenly so you may still want a kettle for pouring), but the MSR pocket rocket will need a kettle to heat water in.

My GO-TO Coffee Hike Kettle

Gooseneck Kettle with Thermometer

It's nice to have a gooseneck kettle to put your water into whatever coffee your are making. I love my steel kettle, because it has a little indicator on top to let you know when the coffee is the right temperature for your French Press, and even though it is bulky, for s short day hike it’s totally doable to carry in your backpack if you want to make coffee on trail.

Backpacking Kettle

GSI Outdoors Lighweight, durable kettle

It’s lighter and perfect for backpacking trips. Halulite is a proprietary alloy that conducts heat more evenly than titanium, so you won't need to bring extra fuel.

LAST THING, Time to choose a coffee Brewing method

French Press? Pour Over? or Aeropress”

FRENCH PRESS

If you’re making multiple cups of coffee of brewing coffee for a group, this method is best. People love the French Press for its simplicity and rich flavors from the brewing process. This is what we use for our guided coffee hikes because you can make a shareable amount of coffee.  This classic brew method comes with either a glass or metal brewing chamber. When you are taking this out on a trail, the metal french press is a better bet. Here is the Ultimate Guide to French Press Coffee before embarking on your next outdoor coffee adventure.

Best, Durable French Press

32 oz stainless steel french press

There are plenty of stainless steel French Press options out there, but I have found this brand to be durable for all of our group coffee hikes, and I really like the wooden touches.

Pour Over

One of my favorite brewing methods in general. So smooth! Simple set up and great coffee, but the process is slower and has a learning curve to get it just right.

Best REusable Pour over Filter

Stainless steel cone filter

There are plenty of stainless steel pour over filters and they will all get the job done, but I have found this brand to be durable for tossing in a backpack.

Pair this Stand with your Pour Over Filter

MiiR Pourigami Pour over stand

This is one of the coolest pieces of coffee gear I own. I honestly love the name, the Pourigami. It fold flat and stores is a little case so you can easily fold it out and slide it together to hold your pour over filters - it works with the steel filter above of you can use the paper filters if you prefer.

AeroPress

MAKES GREAT COFFEE! Honestly, when' I am just amking coffee for me and my partner this is the setup I bring backpacking. Simple, but it’s single serve. Best for solo or couples.

My Favorite Full Aeropress Kit

Aeroprress Go kit

Full set with press, filters, stir stick, and scoop. The AeroPress Go is slightly smaller than the AeroPress Original, but can still produce 1-3 servings of espresso-style coffee, and it features a handy mug and lid that double as a traveling case.

Lightweight, Backpacking French Press

GSI Outdoors JavaPress 30 oz

Lighter weight option. It’s also easy, mess-free and super reliable. Great for bringing along on an overnight trip becuase you cacn toss it in your backpack and not worry. It’s shatter-resistant and makes the perfect cup every time

Best Backpacking Pour Over Filter

There are a few other brands that make these type of mesh fliters, but this one is super inexpensive and works great.

Resuable Filter Option for Aeropress

Stainless Steel Filter for Aeropress

Just like with the pour over, if you want to use reusable filters instead of the paper to reduce waste, this is a great option. Easy to clean, too.
